Dear Ivanka Trump,
As a mother, how much do you love your three children? Surely you would do anything to save one of them in the event of a catastrophe. What if your daughter had been born like Charlie Gard, and you didn’t have millions in the bank to try to save her?
Do you know what empathy is? It’s the ability to share the experience of someone even though you’ve never lived it yourself. If you have any in you, put yourself in the shoes of mothers with sick sons and daughters, who used to have to choose between paying the rent or going to the doctor. Put your own daughter and sons in the shoes of those children, who never asked to grow up that way. ObamaCare stopped that. Now your father says Congress should let ObamaCare fail. You are one of his closest and most trusted advisors. And you are silent.
Let ObamaCare Fail?
At your RNC speech introducing your father, you assured us that “throughout my entire life, I have witnessed his empathy and generosity towards other, especially those who are suffering.” And about yourself, you confessed “I do not consider myself categorically Republican or Democrat. More than party affiliation,” you said, “I vote on based on what I believe is right, for my family and for my country.”
At that same speech, you promised that your father “will focus on making quality childcare affordable and accessible for all.” I hope you can see that he has done nothing to make that promise a reality. He has not proposed any legislation of his own to improve things. In fact, he weakened our healthcare stability with his executive order subtly titled “MINIMIZING THE ECONOMIC BURDEN OF THE PATIENT PROTECTION AND AFFORDABLE CARE ACT PENDING REPEAL.” And he has endorsed whatever garbage Republicans come up with, as if he can’t even be bothered to read it. Oh no, wait. He did say the House version was mean. But that was after heartily lauding it.
Your father has betrayed you, your sons and daughter, and every child in this country by telling our leaders to let ObamaCare fail.
As I have always said, let ObamaCare fail and then come together and do a great healthcare plan. Stay tuned!

Here’s what ObamaCare does for all the children who do not come from your means
You should know that 99% of Americans do not have the financial resources you have known your whole life. That is why ObamaCare is so critical to the rest of us.
It guarantees us Essential Health Benefits for basic healthcare needs, to ensure that our kids have the best chance to grow up healthy and strong, and that we (their parents) stay healthy and strong to support and love them. It provides our kids annual check-ups at no cost. It makes their medicines affordable when they get sick. And for many of America’s children, it keeps them alive. Alive when they suffer from medical conditions they never asked for and never caused.
ObamaCare protects us from being denied coverage if we lose our jobs and their health insurance. It provides healthcare coverage for small business owners who are the lifeblood of this country. Entrepreneurs like you, who (again, like you) want the best for their families. It keeps the most vulnerable parents (who make up about 40% of American adults) from staying up at night worrying about how they will keep their kids healthy if they get sick.
And perhaps most importantly, ObamaCare protects our children health and wellbeing from the political partisanship, and whimsy, of lawmakers who treat healthcare as a bargaining chit.
Your father doesn’t get it.
He has long insisted that the open market will take care of our families and children. Here he is back in 2013, wishing it upon us all:
Republicans have the right approach to ObamaCare – let it fail. Free market solutions will be embraced by Americans in 2016.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 22, 2013
If the free market were going to provide affordable and quality healthcare to all Americans, it would have done so long ago. There would have been no need for ObamaCare. That law was passed to give Americans what the free market would not.
And now that your father has the fate of our healthcare in his hands, his solution is not one of the compassion and empathy you told us is in his heart. It is one of political spite. It is one of callousness. It is a betrayal to us all.
“Let ObamaCare fail” is the “Let them eat cake” of our time.
As one of your father’s most trusted advisors, as a wife, a mother, and a proud American, you have the chance to bring your father back to the person you promised us that he is. To bring him back to the assurances you both made us. To inspire in him the leadership to fix our healthcare, not let it crumble. Whether or not you do that is a test of not only your character but of your humanity.
“Let ObamaCare fail” is the “Let them eat cake” of our time. You have the power, and the moral duty, to stop it. So far however, it seems you lack the decency to do so. Shame on you.
