How is it that Kentucky receives $1.52 for ever dollar we send to Washington? If you are familiar with the dog whistles that people like Mitch McConnell blow incessantly then you will know who the real welfare queens are, the red states. We can thank our Minority Leader for bringing home the bacon but how is it that Kentucky is bankrupting the rest of the country while the infrastructure of our nation is falling apart?
Consider what our legal system is doing to the citizens of the ‘commonwealth.’ There is no wealth of course, our state is broke in more ways than one. The police are going to arrest people. The prosecutors are going to prosecute. The judges are going to sentence people. Law makers are going to make more laws to keep the justice business greased with ‘offenders’ to grind up in it’s terrible mill.
Why is it that our prison population has exploded and crime rates are decreasing? For this Commonwealth, it’s citizens are worth more as prisoners than say, students because truth be told,we are hard on ‘criminals’ and neglectful of students. Why are we telling our children that they are more valuable as a prisoner rather than as a student as evidence by the staggering amount we expend to keep the justice mill grinding away?
I wonder if there will ever come a day when the police’s mantra to ‘protect and serve’ will ever be true? When was the last time you saw those blue flashing lights in your rear view mirror and thought ‘oh goody, I get to talk to a police officer?’ Or is the more common reaction one of terror? There is an old saying, “idle hands are the devil’s workshop.” The police certainly have progressed to the point that they are never idle, there is always somebody to arrest, even innocent people. Innocent meaning harmless.
In the quaint smaller towns of this commonwealth, there is far less to do but to lock up anyone for the most minor offense. When a measure of common sense used to prevail in officers of another period, now you can be locked up for 22 days for not taking your court ordered domestic violence classes even though the Domestic Violence Order has already expired -for two years no less! Such was the case of Randall Stidham in Boyle county Kentucky where the tax payers paid $35 a day to put Mr. Stidham in jail even though he had done nothing to violate his long expired DVO. He was only doing his best to take care of his four boys. He lost his apartment and his job for the trouble while the judge thought about it.
The Drug War costs Blue States Billions.
Last November the bored authorities conjured up a plan to pay informants to entrap other citizens into committing crime. The operation was called ‘November Rain’ and made all the local news cast with 128 people arrested. One of those citizens snared in this insidious exercise was Donnie Ray Keith. He sold two Lortab pills for $16 to a crack addicted informant who was paid $130 for her service but that was not the end of the story. The Commonwealth of Kentucky paid $19,000 for those two pills to imprison Mr. Keith for one year, plus court cost.
Multiply that by 128 others and you can begin to understand why this state is bankrupt and our school systems and infrastructure are falling apart because we have allowed lawyers to take over our government, who make law after law to keep a sufficient client pool to pay for all their mortgages. Conservatively, 2.2 million dollars for a lot of extremely bored police officers to appear to be doing their jobs! The state of Kentucky receives federal grants for making drug arrest and business is booming. Why is it still easier for our children to purchase cocaine and heroin than it is to buy alcohol or tobacco? Because law makers want to maintain that pool of clients. The only people who want to keep the illicit drug trade the way that it is are criminals, from courtrooms, to prisons, to the State houses, to the doctor’s offices because they profit so much from it -all of them.
It was John Mitchell -the only felon to ever go to prison for Watergate- who crafted the Controlled Substances Act of 1969 at the behest of the criminal Richard Nixon. With a stroke of the pen he began a 2.3 trillion dollar war against the citizens of this country and abroad, creating with it a Prison Industrial Complex where precious resources are wasted imprisoning people who’s recidivism rate remains constant. The ease with which we as a nation commit liberticide would appall our founders so much that they would be meeting in secret and calling General Washington to arms!
He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it
Martin Luther King said, “He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.” This insanity will continue in each successive generation so long as the profit to be made by imprisoning our fellow citizens is such that we continue to value liberticide more than education and treatment.
“The evil implanted in man by nature spreads so imperceptibly, when the habit of wrong-doing is unchecked, that he himself can set no limit to his shamelessness.” Cicero was right and unless your Mandarin is fluent, we are going to rudely awaken to the horror that we sold our country out because we passively accepted the draconian beliefs of our grandparent’s puritanical prohibitions, instead of investing in our future. Until we prove to our children they are more valuable to our nation as citizens, rather than prisoners, the fall of the Commonwealth and the Republic will remain imminent.
